What Is an Evacuation Diagram?
An evacuation diagram is a floor plan of your building or level that shows occupants exactly how to evacuate safely in an emergency. It is a legal requirement for virtually all workplaces, schools, childcare centres, and public buildings in Western Australia under the Occupational Safety and Health Regulations 1996 (Regulation 3.10) and must comply with Australian Standard AS 3745-2010 Planning for Emergencies in Facilities.
A compliant evacuation diagram is far more than a simple fire escape map. It must contain a specific set of information — including accurate floor plans, "You Are Here" markers correctly oriented to the viewer's position, all emergency exits, evacuation routes, fire safety equipment locations, first aid equipment, assembly areas, emergency contact numbers, and a compliant legend — all displayed at the correct height and in the correct locations throughout your facility.
At Ready Set Rescue WA, every evacuation diagram we produce is personally reviewed by career firefighters — professionals who understand real-world emergency response, not just theoretical compliance. This means your diagrams don't just pass an audit; they work when it matters most.
Legal Obligation
Under Regulation 3.10 of the WA Occupational Safety and Health Regulations 1996, employers must display evacuation procedures and diagrams clearly and prominently at the workplace. Non-compliance can result in WorkSafe improvement notices and financial penalties.
5-Year Review Required
AS 3745-2010 requires evacuation diagrams to be reviewed at least every five years, and immediately after any changes to your facility, equipment locations, or assembly areas.
